COTD Is Arriving Before The Trade War Ends: COTD

Cotd Inception

The lore of the Autopian is something rather fascinating. David used to store groceries in truck beds and combined the acts of eating a meal and showering into the same activity. Jason has an attraction to attacking things with chainsaws that shouldn’t be cut open. I’m a masochist who keeps buying bad cars and then end up surprised when they’re bad. Oh yeah, and we’re pretty awful at getting certain daily and weekly stories up.

Comment of the Day exists as a way we appreciate you, the readers. I read nearly every comment posted every day, pick some favorites, and write about them. Sometimes, I write a COTD and either I finish it after everyone else has logged out for the night or we just sort of forget to publish it in the rush. This often results in a “Comment of the Yesterday” or a “Comment of the Some Days Ago” if we really screwed up.

Well, in today’s Morning Dump, Matt asked if the trade war will even last until COTD, which should be posted at the end of the day. I’m not even mad at Mechjaz for this:

That depends. ARE YOU ACTUALLY GONNA RUN COTD TODAY??

Sorry, I thought that aggressive stupid all caps was the American method of diplomacy now.

TELL THOMAS WE SAID HELLO

Matt is also asking the Autopian community to help him talk his friend Ron into or out of a Porsche Cayenne. Now, there are lots of good answers, but Jatco Xtronic CVT takes the nomination:

Just tell your friend that it is horribly flawed in a huge way: it’s missing the Jatco Xtronic CVT, the best in transmission technology! Don’t let him go w”Ron”g with a CVT-less vehicle.

Finally, Jason wrote a Cold Start showing his curiosity for the fact that Chrysler brochures are showing what appear to be British soldiers behind a red background. Some readers gave some sweet context, like Captain Muppet:

“ Those there with the tall black furry hat look like what are commonly called Beefeaters, but are technically known as Yeoman Warders. ”

The big tall hat is a bearskin, worn as dress uniform by parts of the British army. Often seen standing very still four hours on end outside Buckingham Palace, anyone wearing one is a soldier.

A beefeater wears a cloth hat and tries not to get cross with tourists at the Tower of London. They are former servicemen/women/persons.

I just googled and bearskins are still made of actual bears! Like silly dress-up hats couldn’t be made of anything else or be changed to not look like a massive merkin. Urgh, it’s so embarrassing being British.

Also Canopysaurus:

Canada was officially a self-governing British colony until 1982 when its constitution was completed. That status was granted in 1867. It became a British commonwealth in 1949 with the dissolution of the British Empire. Notionally, it was British when those Chryslers were produced, though not practically. Incidentally, New York, Saratoga and Windsor were battle sites, the first two from the American Revolution and the latter from the weird Patriot War that ranged from Michigan to Canada in the mid 19th century. That color palette suggests that the British Empire was burning down.

Have a great evening, everyone!

I’m genuinely more proud of being in COTD than I am of being British.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Jatco Xtronic CVT is an absolute treasure.

I agree.

Jatco Xtronic CVT: never change.

Well, they’ll be changed out repeatedly in their lifetime, just with a copy in slightly less-bad mechanical condition.

X3. They’re committed to the bit, and long may they continue!

May they forever be rebuilt, every 45k miles or so.

And the tariffs have been pushed backed for 30 days — on both countries — because reasons. Hardibro called it. Or Mercedes was late. Or both?

You win this time, COTD clock… But we’ll be needlessly redrawing our closest trade partners’ economy with a sharpie soon, don’t you worry.

I fully expect to open up a tab to check the news someday and just see that there’s a giant wiener on the map.

If any cheese farms in Switzerland are hiring, LMK. I am a great taster.

“Alpine, with a hint of *smacks lips* poot.”

Related: Alpina cheese? All wheels must be cut into 21 wedges, per tradition.

Hey, last time Orangey busted out the Sharpie, Alabama was suddenly in danger of a hurricane that came nowhere near us.

I’m afraid.

(on a seriouser note, I guess Hyundai, Honda, Mercedes, and Toyota/Mazda are feeling pretty smug about their massive US-built portfolio here…one might even argue they saw this day coming all along)

Technically they’re mostly in TN, but that’s hit or miss depending on whether the Atlas or some EV is the flavor of the month 🙂

Of course, You-Know-Who tends to have no problem vilifying all foreign brands, even if 80%+ of their content and all of their labor is domestic. I wouldn’t trust any of it…
