It’s Presidents Day, when Americans celebrate the memory of George Washington (and other presidents) by handing out discounts on the three pillars of our economy: mattresses, cars, and memberships to your favorite websites. This year, in recognition of the many contributions of the Marquis de Lafayette to the cause of American freedom, we’re giving everyone a 5.04% discount on membership.
Is it possible that we just wanted a recognizable car number and so chose 5.04% and then worked backward to justify it in a way that seemed to fit with Presidents Day? Maybe! Whatever the reason, become a member of this website for a Peugeot-inspired price by clicking this link or using the code PUGPREZ at checkout.

As an independent media organization, membership is key to our survival. We don’t want to flood the page with ads or overwhelm you with slideshows at the end of every month. By getting a significant portion of our revenue from our readers we can focus on creating the posts you love.
And you get something out of it, too! Become a member and you’ll get more than just the warm feeling of being part of the ultimate community of car fans. You get stuff!
Become a Cloth member and get access to paywalled posts, special member emails, and early access to promotions and events. At the Vinyl level, you’ll also get a t-shirt and a sticker.
Velour members get all of that plus a sweet, sweet car badge and a birthday drawing. Rich Corinthian Leather, at $1,000, gets you a private tour of the Galpin car collection and some other random stuff.
Full membership details are here, and the coupon link is right here.
Happy Presidents Day!
I signed up. Basic-ass cloth level, because that is what a public school teacher can afford.
I am a car guy in spirit more than in actuality. I drive a boring older family crossover (1st gen Highlander, 18 years old, still going strong). Honestly, I will probably always drive a dull car. But I read The Autopian daily and I gotta name why I read and why I signed up, because it is not just about the cars.
The Autopian, I think, is one of the few places where it seems ok to just be your genuine wierd self. DT’s car collecting, then purging. Torch’s borderline kink level of interest in tail lights and general gonzo writing style (Torch, write a novel some day, you will have at least one buyer), Mercedes entire being.
I genuinely think this is a brave act in our world today, which seems increasingly bent on flattening human experience and erasing people who do not fit the mold.
Signing up for a membership here is a small act on my part. But I gotta give to those who are putting in the work.
Oh, now I also miss my sweet 504!

Oh my, what a wonderful shade of green!
“1510 Vert Doré Metalisée” 😀
*insert I’m doing my part gif* I feel special I got a super secret commenter discount email so I signed up.
Awh – you used my favorite car as inspiration. I miss her dearly:

My 504 was before the 5 mph bumper law, but wow! That was a gorgeous color. Mine was just plain white and didn’t have those cool wheels. And I miss my Winnie the Peugeot too.
The 504 was a great car.
Awesome. I love US-spec european cars. Well, most of them; in some cases the 5mph bumpers and headlight regulations did ruin otherwise lovely designs. But for most “regular” cars, I really do like the look of the US-spec. Peugeots are some of my favourite, although I also love me a nice american Volvo wagon. Needless to say, I’m a sucker for AMC Renaults.
Those new shirts look good! I also like Jason’s drawings very much. I have one framed on my kitchen counter.
I got up early for the Presidents Day sales but Vladimir Putin had already bought the only one for sale.
Are you sure it wasn’t Musk?
Russia seems to get a lot of blame for meddling in American politics, as though every regular American assumes that billionaire Americans would never dare interfere in politics
And they act so insulted when the most common global stereotypes about Americans is how stupid they are.
Torch is just the best! His birthday drawings are legit. I can’t wait to frame mine. Also, the back-and-forth on the slack between Jason and David reminds me of Adam and Jamie on Mythbusters.
And don’t forget that 50501 is organizing protests in every state capitol and in a lot of major cities today.
Yes! I participated in the Denver edition yesterday, which was also my birthday. It was exhilarating!
HOORAY! THANK YOU! AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Happy Presidents Day you say?
When is Dipshit Dictators Day?
Everyday you say? Works for me.
Well, a congresswoman in upstate New York is introducing a bill to make Trump’s birthday a national holiday, but never forget that punch-a-Nazi Day is every day.
My birthday drawing made it into the collage. How cool!
Don’t forget carpet. Never let a holiday go to waste.

Fun fact: the HTTP error code for Gateway Timeout is 504.
Occasionally the site we’re on right now will experience that, so it’s even more relevant! 😉
Bad, naughty, evil gateway!
I think my favorite so far is the time we all had each others’ names when we signed in. Since it didn’t actually post under other users’ names, it was just a big silly shenanigan.
It’s been setting light to the gateway-shaped beacon!
That was fun – and I appreciate seeing the singular form of shenanigan. 🙂
Presumably you already know about Peugeot using pictures of vintage 404s for their website’s HTTP 404 page?

But of course!
Thank you for sharing with the rest of the class. 🙂
Glad to share! It was actually a real thrill when I encountered Peugeot’s 404 page IRL. A few years ago one night I had insomnia and was browsing their website to see just exactly what us ‘Muricans weren’t getting here, ha, and at one point I was looking something up (alas, I do not remember what it was; it was extremely late at night or, rather, extremely early in the morning) and got a bona fide HTTP 404 page with a 404. Yeah, it was an unexpected and pleasant surprise.
I did NOT know that until now. And thank you for sharing it. The last one I drove was a rented 307 diesel 5-door hatchback in France, and if I could have brought it home, I would have. Along with the turbo-diesel Fiat Croma estate I rented in Italy a few years later.
The stuff that’s denied to us in the States… I can’t think of a single car I’ve rented in North America (out of literally hundreds) that I wanted to own, but those two… Yes please.
The only other would be a N/A Saab 9000 stick I rented in Sweden. I eventually bought a used 9000 Turbo, but it had an automatic and wasn’t as engaging. But it also was kind to me and didn’t require anything expensive more than a muffler.
For the sake of sanity, maybe we should call this 504s day instead? Happy 504s day to all Americans.
Aw, every day is a good day to see a sweet 504!
I was watching only murders in the building last night and they had a 504 in there. It made me very happy. My wife just rolled her eyes
As wives, who never drove a 504, are wont to do. Don’t kick her out of bed. Unless she is eating crackers.
