Wildcard: #7 is Adrian. The tapes came with the Mondial and he’s left them untouched as an art piece.
1 = Thomas
2 = Mercedes
3 = Peter or Mark. Maybe SWG.
4 = Lewin?
5 = David
6 = Adrian
7 = Jason
I know who a FEW of these bands/artists are! (a small few, I’m old) I do have “Common Thread” on CD (not cassette, sorry). And, Vince Gill now is kinda-sorta an Eagle himself!
I don’t have any guesses, but I am going to think just a bit less of anyone listening to that much Foo Fighters.
No Charli XCX? Really? That is so not brat. Anyway.
#1 is Mark.
#2 is Mercedes. Kacey Musgraves feels like her kind of jam.
#3 is David. (The only-sending-one-screen thing kind of gives it away)
#4 is Griffin. I LOVED that Kaytranada album.
#5 is Thomas. Edited: I said what I said.
#6 is Matt.
#7 is clearly Torch; am I the only one disappointed that he didn’t make a phony Spotify Wrapped with fictional bands?
Edited to correctly match numbers to selections.
I am very much looking forward to seeing the answers.
All these songs and not one person had Plantman by Gary Young in their playlist.
I expected weirder from the group.
I do know that song, if that counts for anything.
Fontaines DC, nice.
Also, the new Childish Gambino may be good, but there’s no topping this.
Me, Griffin, David, Jason, Mercedes, Thomas, and Mark (copying list for my own use).
1) Thomas
2) Matt – I too listen to a lot of Blur
3) Mark
4) Griffin
5) David – no doubt (not the band) here
6) Mercedes
7) Jason – based on his reaction to sharing his Netflix home screen, I imagine he took the opportunity to also treat this as a joke, which I appreciate.
#1 is Thomas I think. #3 probably has the closest musical taste to me, I’m going SWG.
My wrapped had a lot of Clutch, Bad Religion and NoFX. Why yes, I’m in my mid 40s. Also I had spotify on for 64,000 minutes last year.
Not sure who is who, but in order of who I would rather be listening to tunes in the car with:
A few hours of hooning the ChangLi with #7 while we blast those tapes from a vintage Sanyo boombox would be hilarious.#3 has very similar taste to me, and I could easily spend the day in the car with #2 too. Anyone who is listening to Elastica or Supergrass is a friend of mine.I have no idea what to expect when #6 turns on the stereo. “Wild west beach country” sounds like it could be amazing or awful, I haven’t decided yet.I am guessing I might be 30 years older than #1, and possibly #4 too. Their music taste might be amazing, but I gave up trying to keep up with the hit parade years ago.#5 would be a living hell, though I wonder if they switch out the countdown timer for some soothing buddhist soundscapes while driving just to liven things up.
No idea but thanks for all the new music to check out. Well yes Jason is #7
Ok, just a couple guesses:
7-Jason
1-Thomas
4-Mercedes
2-Mark
That’s all I got..
Our family were country radio listeners in the early ’90s, and I think I remember some of those Eagles covers…. Once upon a time, we were in Georgia visiting a cousin of my mom’s, and I think he wanted to impress us with his connections in the local music scene, which is how we ended up at Alan Jackson’s mother’s house. What a random memory. We got some autographed headshots of Alan out of it, even though he wasn’t there. Anyway, of the music from that time that I’ll still willingly listen to…um, that ain’t it. But it’s the “Cursor” tape that really gives away that stash as Jason’s, since I’m pretty sure that one has nothing to do with playing music.
You could just… drive to Alan Jackson’s house? The ’90s were wild.
Listener #1 I have as Mercedes.
Listener #5 is David because I don’t think he knows what music is unless it’s the sound of a 1983 AMC transfer case built in Saskatchewan.
Listener #6 has to be Adrian but seeing as how he’s not listed, now I’m confuddled. Maybe Matt?
Listener #7 is Jason because Jason.
That leaves 2, 3 and 4 as random guess…..
#2-Mark
#3-Griffin
#4-Thomas
I’m probably wrong on all of these, but fuck it.
I think the tapes must be Jason. Something about the Jive Jews, Spinal Tap, and Combat Rock combo.
I guess the biggest surprise here is that my music preferences this year didn’t really match my personality. Usually, my playlists are full of stuff like Weird Al. Well, not this year! 😉
Might I suggest Tom Cardy for future listening?
Do you know where my car keys are?
HYCYB?
Skibap, badap
Also! Try Richard Cheese on for size. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Bach’s complete works for organ (Deutsche Grammophon pressing) and some Jacques Loussier. Sorry, wrong game,but someone will like it.
Thanks for reminding me that I’m old and don’t recognize over half those bands!
So for the few I recognize enough bands:
#3 – Jason
#5 – David (thanks for at least one gimme!)
#7 – Both Mark and Jason seem like a box of tapes kinda guys, but I don’t see Jason listening to CW covers of The Eagles. I can see Mark listening to this though.
I have no effing clue for the remainder.
I think it has been 10 years since I last had a car with a tape deck.
Really? I totally would have bet on your forest service truck having a cassette. Did you swap head units?
I did, but the original one was only AM/FM, and only two speakers.
I’m never good at these games, but if Night Flight Orchestra beats out Foo Fighters, I really need to check them out.
Night Flight Orchestra is awesome. Bunch of people from various pretty extreme metal bands making a homage to 70s rock. Reading that description may make it seem like they may be making fun of it like Steel Panther does with hair metal but if they are it doesn’t come across that way.
Who is that?
Edit: NM, turns out he’s the photographer 🙂
happy to be here Barth ????
Glad to have you here! No shade was intended; we just don’t see your name as much. 🙂
I think Griffin might have used an emoji, but sometimes our site turns them into ???? so you just look super confused. lol
Very true – the ones that definitely work are 🙂 😛 😮 and 😀
Beyond that, I can’t say
I’m not sure who is who but I know I wouldn’t mind riding in the car with #3.
#7 Box of cassettes – Jason.
#6 Goth sythesizer futurepop – Uncle A.
#5 30 minute countdown timer, no music – David (my headcanon is that he sets 30 minutes per article to edit, started as an experiment to improve his productivity, and has now turned into a cult-like obsession…)
#4 Youtube music – Mercedes, maybe? I didn’t know YT music did a recap, I’ll have to see what it says about my listening habits…
#3 Loves Beck and the Foo Fighters? They’re my age, whoever it is – I’m going SWG, AKA the enchanting wizard of rhythm.
#2 Elastica and the Yeah yeah yeahs? Hmmm… That you, Mr. Hundal?
#1 I’m way too old to relate to any of the music on this person’s list. Lewin?
Ahh, I too missed that the choices were listed. I’m too lazy to go back and re-do my picks, but I do love that so far we’re unanimous in assigning David the 30 minute timer! XD
I’m too hip but I’m also a bit young for #1. 😛
I don’t think Jason hit me up for this one anyway hahaha
Whoops, just saw the instructions with the list of people: Me, Griffin, David, Jason, Mercedes, Thomas, and Mark. Revised guesses:

I will say I am a big Pixies fan but I am not on the list for this one XD
I would have expected to see a couple of Aussie bands as well. I had a good time going to random gigs when I lived in Sydney 20 years ago. Dappled Cities Fly and Disaster Plan . . . but who knows what the kids are listening to these days . . .
