Programming Note: We Are Doing Back-End Work On The Site So There Might Be Some Weirdness

Quick Website Update
ADVERTISEMENT

Hey y’all, I just wanted to let everyone know that we’re doing some important upgrades to the single TRS-80 Model II (we’re upgrading to the Model III) in Jason’s basement that runs the entire site. Our hope is that by making this improvement we can improve site speed by simplifying and adding lightness. As some of Colin Chapman’s own drivers found out… that’s not always a perfect process.

We tried to do the full swap last night and hit a couple of snags so we reverted back to the original site. In the process, some people saw notifications disappear for some reason. We’re investigating. If you see any weirdness please tell us, but also please know that we’re working on it and are making changes to the site to hopefully make at an even better place to be. Thanks! Oh Sweet! So my device won’t overheat when even thinking about opening more than 1 article?

I’ve ignored the notifications for weeks because I’ve not been able to open them at all. So not having even the basic bell is quite the relief cause when it jumped around without me being able to do anything about it was very very annoying.

For notifications, is there a way to add a running list of previous ones? When the little bell lights up and I click on it, it brings up whatever notifications are there, but if that disappears, like when I have to try and click out of the ad that conveniently sits right on top of the drop down list, then there is no way to get back to them.

Or am I missing something in a different part somewhere?

At the top of comments, there is an icon of a person w/ a gear; click on that and it will show all past comments

THANK YOU!!! I’ve been thinking I’m just dumb or something, not being able to find my own comment history. I never noticed that tiny little icon.

Now I have some catching up to do on certain conversations….

Thanks for pointing this out. I know I never noticed this before. Must not have done enough clicking around or it’s a new addition.

The ad on top of that area is a big issue. They should just move it to the bottom.

Please! it shouldn’t be that hard, even just move it down to mid screen

Feature request, dark mode. I’m a fan of the Motorama styling but you know they make cars in black too 😉

While you’re under the hood, fix the “multiple notifications that all disappear after the user touches one of them.”

“Anybody want a soda or something? I’m going up to the machine. I’d thought I’d get somebody something. I’ve had only sweets and I’m gonna get something salty… Oh! I uh, finished debugging the phones. I was going to, uh, so I did. So I debugged the phones. And I thought maybe I should tell you that the system is going to be, um… uh… compiling for eighteen to twenty minutes. So some of the minor systems, they may go on or off for a while, but it’s nothing to worry about, it’s just a simple thing.”

The 16k RAM of the Trash-80 Model II should be more than sufficient for anyone!

Notifications have not been working for me, but we’ll let y’all work the kinks out.

I’m of the generation old enough to have owned one of these (and judging by your use of “Trash-80…”, I’m guessing you are as well). It was my computer in college in the early 80’s… though nicknamed “trash”, it really wasn’t so bad, and definitely let me be briefly “cool” as a freshman (at least with the nerds).

Minor suggestion- Get rid of the weird profile picture service? I’d much prefer to just upload a small/low resolution picture than to sign up to some weird service I’ve only ever seen used here.

One of these days I’ll crack Hardigree’s will, and they’ll let me test the site before they push it to production.

One day.

I don’t always test my code, but when I do, I do it in production.

At work we have to test code in a dev environment, then do documented testing in a QA environment under change control before it moves to production. However, one site has automation where no dev or QA environment exists so we just throw it into production and do a documented PQ test and hope it doesn’t blow up. Back out plans are mandatory.

Amateurs! Our dev environment is the production environment! In fact, it’s our customer’s production environment, not ours! That’s how you move fast and break stuff, people!

May I make a minor suggestion to improve the site? On the home page where it says “Matt Hardigree  September 17, 2024  1:41 pm  4 Comments” can you make the “4 comments” a link that takes you straight to the comments? Some of these are worth checking on a few times a day.

I you click the bell icon while the video is playing in the upper right, it pops up beneath the video. If you dismiss the video then the notification popup disappears and you’ll never see those notifications again.

They are going to WordPress the shit out of us. 🙂

Aside: Please make sure you guys keep the new stack promptly and continuously updated. WP has a fairly larger surface and is a popular target. Apologies for stating the obvious, but we don’t want to experience a CDK.

That said, I applaud the inclination to upgrade, if only for a better comment system.

I got in the habit of middle clicking on each “has replied to your comment” to open it in a new tab before clicking anywhere that’ll make the bell go away.
