RIP Jimmy Carter, The Only President I Ever Met, And He Had An Amphicar!

Cs Carter Top

Yesterday, the 39th President of the United States, and very likely the best ex-president we’ve ever had, Jimmy Carter, died. He made it to 100 years old, won a Nobel Peace Prize,  was attacked by a rabbit, led the effort to eliminate a horrible parasitic worm, was the only nuclear engineer to be president, but in my selfish worldview, he’s most important because of two things: first, he’s the only US president I’ve ever met, in person (and in a bathroom), and nextly, he’s only one of two presidents to own an Amphicar.

Yes, I met President Carter! It’s true! I even sort of have photographic evidence, and there’s also some photographic evidence of the Amphicar part, so you can rest assured I’m not making any of this up, as I know I’m wont to do sometimes. In fact, I’ll include a bit about Carter and cars I did make up a few years ago, just in the interest of full disclosure.

Vidframe Min Bottom

Anyway, here’s the picture of Carter, me, and a bunch of other people who were part of Emory University’s student publications department around…1990, I want to say? Maybe ’91?

Cs Carter Pic 1

I was on the staff of the humor magazine, The Spoke, and I wrote for and did political and other cartoons for The Wheel, the student newspaper. Everyone who wasn’t a former president in the picture was involved in some student publication, and, yeah, both sweater guy and I probably could have found a blazer somewhere.

Carter came to Emory to speak every year, because the school was in his home state of Georgia and for other reasons I was never really compelled to look into. But he did, and he was always a great speaker.

I actually got to meet him one-on-one by chance in the bathroom after this photo was taken. President Carter and I were similar in that we both have bladders that occasionally fill with urine, and we periodically choose to decant that urine into something like a urinal, or perhaps against a tree or building side. This time it was a urinal.

After we’d both emptied our bladders and were washing hands, I turned to him at the sink and told him I was a big fan and had all his albums; thankfully, he wasn’t offended and chuckled and shook my hand. I was struck by the fact he wasn’t really much taller than me, and had really clear blue eyes. He was a very kind, humble, approachable man.

In hindsight, it’s all the more incredible, when you think about it. He didn’t have a very intense secret service detail; I think there were a couple agents with him, but they sure didn’t follow him everywhere, like in the bathroom.

So, that’s the extent of my meeting a president: close to urinals, made a dumb joke.

Now, for the important automotive part: Carter is one of only two presidents to own an Amphicar. The most famous of which is, of course, Lyndon Johnson, because he used to like to prank people by pretending the brakes of the Amphicar were out, then driving full speed into a lake or whatever.

Cs Carter Amphi Draw

But that’s not Carter’s style. Carter seemed to just enjoy his mint-colored Amphicar and wasn’t interested in scaring the shit out of the people who chose to ride with him. I suspect he approached every lakeshore gingerly and explained to everyone that now they’d be making a bold transition from land to water, looking understandingly at his three passengers. Something like that.

Also, I want to know who owned the sex-van back there? I bet it was his brother, Billy. That feels on-brand.

Okay, here’s the lie I told about Jimmy Carter and cars: he used a Chevette Scooter as his inauguration vehicle, and it broke down in the middle of the parade route.

Cs Carter Scrnshot

I was playing on the idea of the energy crisis that was going on during the Carter Administration, because that was a big deal. We had the usually-hated 55 mph speed limit, Carter had solar water heaters installed on the White House, and he generally practiced what he preached when it came to energy conservation, so it seemed just plausible enough that he’d choose the cheapest Malaise-era car for his inauguration, a Chevette Scooter. And it seemed plausible it’d break down halfway.

Of course, that’s not what actually happened. What actually happened was even more unexpected, and showed that Carter literally walked the walk when it came to conserving energy, because he was the first president to get out of his vehicle and walk the parade route:

It’s also worth noting for all of you automotive journalism geeks that Carter was also the president that inspired the legendary Murilee Martin’s coining of the phrase “Malaise Era,” referring to the fiercely lackluster cars America was farting out in the mid-to-late 1970s. Here’s the speech that the use of “malaise” came from:

Jimmy Carter’s presidency may have only been one term, and maybe that lone term wasn’t everything anyone hoped for, but he remains one of the most intelligent and kind people to ever hold the office, and his post-presidential works remain the standard by which every other president will be judged.

Rest in peace, President Carter.

He was a close friend of my country in times of the deepest horror, and did everything in his power to help bring democracy back. I have immense respect for this guy.
Rest in Peace.

Youngs might not know that Rolling Stone magazine and Hunter S. Thompson in particular went a long way to securing the youth vote for Carter. “Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ..’76” is a terrific read. While looking that up see also the brilliant SNL sketch featuring Dan Akroyd as Jimmah.

Sadly, intelligence and kindness are very much out of favor in political leaders these days. In favor: crudeness, stupidity, and venality.

Never underestimate the power of human stupidity!

Democracy is based on the assumption that a million men are wiser than one man. How’s that again? I missed something.

Autocracy is based on the assumption that one man is wiser than a million men. Let’s play that over again, too. Who decides?

Any government will work if authority and responsibility are equal and coordinate. This does not insure “good” government; it simply insures that it will work. But such governments are rare–most people want to run things but want no part of the blame. This used to be called the “backseat-driver syndrome.”

If you are part of a society that votes, then do so. There may be no candidates and no measures you want to vote for…but there are certain to be ones you want to vote against. In case of doubt, vote against. By this rule you will rarely go wrong. If this is too blind for your taste, consult some well-meaning fool (there is always one around) and ask his advice. Then vote the other way. This enables you to be a good citizen (if such is your wish) without spending the enormous amount of time on it that truly intelligent exercise of franchise requires.

Carter was the first President I remember, and little me thought it was cool that he was young and fit and had a kid my age. But not everyone in the house was a fan. My mother and I got home on a hot August day and asked Grandma if anything happened while we were out. She announced with great conviction “Elvis is dead and Jimmy Carter is still the Goddamned President.”

He was also called the Rock ‘n’ Roll President because he hobnobbed with several artists.

He was certainly the best former President of my lifetime.

Nixon- no real expectations here.
Ford- nice guy, kind of fell into the job.
Carter- amazing human being who worked tirelessly for the benefit of humanity.
Reagan- gets a pass because he had dementia when he left the White House. Also had it during his second term, and probably his first term.
GW Bush- also did some nice humanitarian work, but failed to alert America to what a horrible mistake it would be to let his son be President.
Clinton- Epstein. Has also done some humanitarian work, but Epstein.
Dubya- hasn’t committed any war crimes since leaving office, so hooray?
Obama- Netflix star. Did come back to preemptively shame Black men for voting for Trump, which clearly saved the day.
Trump- this motherfucker will eventually have two entries? Ugh. Tried to overthrow the government and kept our courts very busy what with the rape, tax fraud, and coup trials.
Biden- probably going the Regan route.

Does anyone know when the Secret Service decided that presidents cannot drive while in office? Did it start when they saw President Carter walking towards his Amphicar?

Ford never got elected and narrowly survived two assassination attempts in less than a single term. He would have been shot at point blank range in the first one if the would-be killer had realized she needed to chamber a round before her gun would fire.

Ford v Carter is the first presidential election I remember (I was 7 and for some reason followed politics). He was so vilified over inflation, hostages, and 55 mph. In reality, he may have been the last moral guy, besides maybe Obama, to have the job.

RIP Jimmy, you earned it. Dad (who was NOT a Carter fan) said he is likely the best person ever to have served as President. I suspect all who crossed his path felt the same. I respect anyone who has and truly acts upon a deep faith without forcing it upon others. The man appears to have had limitless generosity.

He will be missed in this modern world.

My second favorite Carter of 70s, after Lynda. Interesting that their terms overlapped. First president I ever voted for as I was 19 when he ran for election. A final farewell to a good man. That used to mean something.

That is kind of weird that two presidents, neither of whom was especially interested in cars, would both own a relatively rare and obscure amphibious car, things sometimes happen that way, I suppose. Honestly, LBJ doesn’t seem like the typical Amphicar owner at first glance, if there is such a thing, but he seems to fit the mold a little more than Carter

I don’t believe Johnson went to Annapolis, but he did get a direct commission into the Reserve during WWII, so that could be the common line. The Navy does seem to really like the glub-glub

AMPHICAR! TIL there were two presidents with one.

I do not need or want to be president. I think I have too many morals and too few conflicts of interests for the modern-day version of that job. However, I do need an Amphicar.

Thanks Torch…seeing much about Jimmy of course.
We were lucky to have a guy like him, even though he inherited a shit show in the win of 1976.
He was a true hero, a fine gentleman, and an inspiration to all Americans to try to be the best people we could be.

BTW there’s a great clip on You Tube of him on the Letterman show opening with Jimmy, Paul, and Dave. Very funny.

And I’m thankful he does not need to be here for the next chapter of the “new boss, same as the old boss” turd shit show coming up as we get ready to watch the world burn the next four years…

The rabbit attack was epic as well.

RIP, Jimmy.
And many thanks too.

In my mind he and Rosalynn are inextricably connected to Habitat for Humanity (habitat.org). The pair of them were big proponents of affordable housing for everyone, and they started about 40 years ago.

The world was a better place with him in it.

Same. A few decades ago I was volunteering to do drywall for new neighborhood of affordable housing Habitat for Humanity was building. I was in the middle of installing a sheet of drywall on the ceiling when I heard a big hullabaloo outside but wasn’t in a position to stop what I was doing. I later found out it was Jimmy Carter stopping by, on his way from the airport to speak at a university, to thank everyone for helping out. I didn’t quite understand why he would take the time, considering how many Habitat builds probably go on concurrently all across the country each day, until I discovered that the build I was helping on was one he had been trying to come to fruition for years – the reason it was a neighborhood instead of just a few houses was all part of his direct efforts. Now I’m disappointed, once again, I didn’t get to shake his hand that day.
