Spotted: The New Hyundai Casper Testing In The UK

Automakers love keeping new cars under wraps, but at some point, they usually need to do some testing outside. That’s when the camo wraps come out, and that gives eager car spotters the perfect opportunity to catch them in the wild.

That’s precisely what happened in this case. Our reader, Tom Newis, managed to spot a curious wrapped car in the Lake District in the United Kingdom. He snapped a few pics and raised the question of what he was actually looking at. His leading theory? Perhaps a new Fiat 500L.

In house at The Autopian, I  gathered the council messaged Slack, and only Jason was awake. Our conclusion? We thought it looked like a new Fiat Panda. I spent two hours researching and working on that theory, ending up in confused loops because we’ve already seen the new Fiat Panda—or Grande Panda as it’s now known. Then I finally Googled the wheels. This isn’t a a Fiat at all. It’s the bloody Hyundai Casper!Image0 (2)

It’s someone! Is that a secret Fiat operative? No! It’s probably a Hyundai guy.

I want to issue a heartfelt thank you to The Korean Car Blog and Daum.net, which both posted photos of of a prototype Casper testing in Japan. Notably, we can see this is the same vehicle, because of the matching wheels, front lights, and the distinctive roof racks that are supported in three locations.

Hyundai threw us off, because parking this thing in front of a Fiat just sent our mind racing that way. But it shouldn’t have been that hard. We saw hazy concept pictures of this very vehicle just a couple of months ago!

Were we being mind poisoned because this thing was photographed next to a Fiat? Yes. It’s a Hyundai!
Look at Hyundai’s concept image! It’s the wheels! And the lights!
And the roof racks, too!

Unfortunately, the Casper won’t be called that in all markets. Hyundai will brand this diminutive city car as the “Inster” in places like Australia, which is a lot less fun and harder to say, to boot.

Funnily enough, we got to see the sub-compact EV in full detail at the end of June. Which begs the question—why is Hyundai still driving this thing around in camo in the UK?

The Casper will first drop in Korea this summer. It will come with over 186 miles of range in standard form with the 42 kWh battery. That jumps to approximately 220 miles for the Long Range version with a 49 kWh pack. Standard and long range versions get 96 hp and 114 hp respectively from a single motor driving the front wheels. It will recharge at up to 120 kW, which can take the battery from 10 to 80% full in 30 minutes.

The Casper (or Inster) is shaping up to be a capable and attractive EV city car. It’s also got retro good looks that are altogether somewhat similar to the Rivian R3, which sent the world wild just a few months ago. Hyundai has also promised an Inster Cross model to come down the line, with a more “rugged, outdoor-focused design,” so get excited for that one.

Cool car, but not an attractive color scheme—inside or out.

We can only speculate as to why Hyundai has these things still camouflaged in the UK. The model is already confirmed for Europe, after all, and everybody knows what it look like. Perhaps most likely, it’s just a mule car that’s doing some final approval testing ahead of a UK launch date yet to come.

In any case, we love it when readers send in shots of test mules—especially when we can figure out what they are! A big thank you to Tom for hitting us up. If you’ve got your own spy pics, you can send them our way too—post them to tips@theautopian.com!

It was doing hot weather testing back in January on an airstrip not far from Lawrence’s place…

“why is Hyundai still driving this thing around in camo”

Hypothesis: this vehicle was wrapped and testing in public before the reveal, and they just haven’t bothered to peel it off since.

I see a bunch of these on the road when I was in Korea last month. Had no idea it was a brand new car, nor did I know it was an EV. Nice looking car.

The rear and interior look ok, but I hate the front end, especially the headlights, and those wheels.

The front end treatment on Fiat’s Panda Grande is a lot better looking, IMO, but it has its own wheel issues.

Looks all right. Coming to the U.S., or not coming to the U.S.? You know what should come to the States? That new Panda Grande. I like that little guy.

Yeah, that’s what I’m wondering. Looks like it’ll slot alongside the Venue – or perhaps even replace it since the Venue has stuck around for a few years already. I don’t think they’re planning on doing dual powertrains for it, ICE or EV, like they currently do with the Kona, otherwise I’d say it’s just the new Venue over here.

Honestly there’s no point in bringing a new electric car to the US unless it has NACS, which means greater engineering costs and more time to implement the changes.

Europe has CCS due to regulations and the lack of alternating current. In a market with both AC and DC charging NACS makes the most sense.

It sort of reminds me of Hyundai’s Venue, which (AFAICR) hasn’t been changed much since it was released quite a few years ago. I drove it with both the manual and automatic, and TBH it wasn’t bad at all for a city runabout (I didn’t get them on the freeway). Not much room in the back, but the manual felt a bit faster than semi-sluggish… I kinda liked it, and it started around $21K when it first came out.

Much cheaper than $21k – I got my Venue with the 6-speed manual for $17.5k out the door. It’s been a good hatchback for the past 4 years/20 thousand miles.

Looks like an updated Hyundai Venue which we already have in the states.

I believe the Casper is significantly smaller, it would be the smallest car for sale in the states by a good amount if it was sold here.

Wow. So much hate for such a little car. I was in South Korea a month ago for a week and saw what I assume is petrol version of the Casper every where. I actually like it. Hope they bring the EV version to the states.

Okay, you can light the pyre underneath the stake I’ve been tied to now.

I hate the pick axe wheels. I bet the US will get this when Hyundai opens it’s new plant in Georgia.

I hate the mismatched doors – but those won’t get changed.

They should leave the camo in place when it goes on sale. This is butt ugly, literally. That back end styling is just horrible. Getting so tired of flares, coves, scoops, accent lines, etc. that clutter up so many Korean and Japanese cars, especially. They look like insects with radiation sickness.
