Today Thomas wrote about how some ingenious Tesla owners are cracking their cars’ code in order to get a bit more power out of those motors. This was a perfectly serviceable article idea all the way up until Thomas wrote this.
Here’s the quote from Thomas:
…occasionally EVs have something in reserve, particularly if an over-the-air downloadable paid add-on for additional horsepower is available, or if major components are shared between models with differing outputs. Electric vehicles like the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y, for example.
Cue Ingenext, a Quebec-based EV recycler, parts company, and yes, tuner. In between breaking down salvaged EVs for parts and swapping Chevrolet Bolt powertrains into airport tugs, the firm cranks out a line of impressive plug-and-play piggyback controllers for Tesla Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles that promise meaningful horsepower gains and a whole bunch of other perks.
Did you see the buried lede? Hell, more like a buried story entirely. Autopian reader “Hi, I’m Danny Ganz” sure did, which is why he has over a dozen likes on this comment:
“Tuning Tesla Model 3s For Up To 150 Extra Horsepower”
yawn
“swapping Chevrolet Bolt powertrains into airport tugs”
you have my attention
I’m with you, “Hi, I’m Danny Ganz.” I want to learn more about Chevy Bolt powertrains in airport tugs. Reader “My Goat Ate My Homework” agrees:
I know, totally buried. My brain was like “say what?!” That’s what I want to hear about.
Speedway Sammy concurs:
Seems like a perfect application you need torque not speed and battery pack weight is a bonus for traction.
As does Jb996:
I’d like to hear more!!
So Thomas, crack open a new tab and get started. I want the draft on my desk FIRST THING.
YES YES YES
I DEMAND AIRPORT TUG BURNOUTS
This is where I come for all of my airport tug content. Don’t let me down, Thomas!
A while back The Autopian asked readers what kind of content they’d like to see more of. I replied, “More weirdness, please.” So, yeah, like Bolt powertrains in airport tugs.
Do they still make Tab?
You can buy it by the shipping container on Alibaba.
Interesting. I’ve only ever seen it in cans and bottles.

I don’t know, but the last time I saw Tab actually on sale, I was so shocked that I had to buy a can just to say that I did. This was maybe 15 years ago.
It tasted… like you remember. What on earth were we all thinking back then.
Mmmmm. That sweet, sweet saccharin aftertaste.
Alright, just give me a Pepsi Free.
If you want a Pepsi, pal, you’re gonna pay for it!
ALL I WANTED WAS A PEPSI! JUST ONE PEPSI!
“MY BEST INTEREST?!?!?”
I’m not crazy!
You’re the one that’s crazy!
Won’t you gentlemen have a Pepsi?
I can only think of the Sarah Silverman episode where the guys get increasingly over the top about Tab.
Coke discontinued it in 2020. Now you can buy a 12-pack on Ebay for $400, because OF COURSE YOU CAN
“What’s my secret? Jazzercise and Tab sweetie.”
Dang. I thought Sid Bridge had one for sure with Monet’s “tie rod phase.” Congrats to the winners, yet I admit that was the COTD in my heart.
Same.
Seeing as I live near the QC border and have a plan to build an EV conversion one day, this is VERY interesting information.
GM always claimed they would do this with the eCrate:

The rollout has been slow. Hard to believe it would be cheaper than a decent used Bolt.
If I can get my hands on a family member’s mid ’60s Impala, that might prove more interesting than just dropping a LS in. The car is in unmolested condition, but need mechanical rebuilding throughout. Sad though that it is only 200 HP. I’d need a little more than that for the amount of steel in that 4-door.
So… 60’s sedans are lighter than they look. I bet a Bolt only weights 500 lbs less than an average 60’s luxo barge.
It weighs about 200 more lbs than my previous 2016 Honda Accord V67 sedan that had almost 280hp. So, I still think 200hp, while adequate, is fine, but adequate is not how I roll.
I can completely respect that.
Sounds like you need a Blackwing V8.
Ford was going to offer the same with the drive unit from the Mach-E, but I have yet to see it out there either.
Perhaps someone from the automotive press should do some digging into what happened with those e-crate motors. Not just Ford & Chevy, but is there a Mopar one in the works?
