This Is The BMW M5 Touring Before You’re Supposed To See It, And Yes, It’s Coming To America

What appear to be extremely official press photos of the incoming BMW M5 Touring have leaked onto the internet, and since we haven’t signed any embargo agreement, it’s our pleasure to share them with you. Alright, maybe “pleasure” is the wrong word, seeing how the arc of the latest M5 from hype to spec sheet reality has taken a more downwards trajectory than the Titan submersible.

For decades, BMW enthusiasts have dreamed of a BMW M5 Touring being sold through American showrooms. After all, if the M5 is the archetypal super sedan, what better than making it a wagon? While Europe did get a wagon version of the second-generation E34 M5, as well as the raucous V10-powered E61 M5 Touring, an M5 Touring has remained forbidden fruit for America, until now.

At first, it felt like everyone was excited for a longroof M5 to come to America. Then when the G90 M5 sedan dropped, people were less enthused. Not only does it weigh more than a crew cab F-150, it’s also slightly slower to 62 mph than the old M5 Competition. Could the Touring tilt the tables? Let’s have a quick look.

Straight out of the gate, there are things to like about the back of the BMW M5 Touring and things that make you wonder. The wagon bodystyle definitely mitigates some of the weirdness with the rump of the sedan, while the upturned tips at the outer edges of the taillights are quite nice. At the same time, the weird corners of the bumper cover remain, and the split diffuser still looks awkward, with the painted section of the bumper cover poorly resolved.

Bmw M5 Touring Leak Profile

Moving around to a profile view, the BMW M5 Touring feature the same sort of hacky door-to-quarter transition as on the regular M5, and there’s a lot of metal in the area between the rear arch, taillight, and greenhouse, but I reckon the wagon roofline just helps a bit compared to the sedan. Not only should this be a more practical vehicle, but also a slight visual improvement over the sedan. If you want a seriously quick M-car that’s a plug-in hybrid and can also haul stuff, the new BMW M5 Touring is looking like your best option. Weird set of criteria, but these people have to be out there, right?

As of right now, there are no official figures out on the new BMW M5 Touring, but don’t be surprised if it features the same 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged S68B44T0 V8 engine as the M5 sedan, the same 14.8 kWh battery pack, and the same combined output of 717 horsepower and 738 lb.-ft. of torque. It’ll be interesting to see how much weight the wagon body adds over the sedan’s insane 5,368-pound curb weight, and what effect that has on performance, but we’ll just have to wait for the official launch. Until then, this is it. Anyone else slightly underwhelmed?

This green is so good. If I could get the current M3 Touring with a manual and the M340i’s front end, it would be mine.

I notice you didn’t even attempt to say anything positive about the front of it…

Only thing missing is the man-tran.
There is absolutely no reason it should weigh that much. M-series should be stripping it down.

A twin turbo v8 with a hybrid system is going to weigh that much. The S63 weighs more.

Who doesn’t want any of these things? And all in one car without resorting to have three?
Me like, me want, me…(checking wallet)… a little short on the dough.

Ughh that front end is just so disappointing. Not as bad as the M4 but the grille design looks like it should be on an economy CUV. Such a bland, soft, shape that overflows into the hood doesn’t give any cues towards it being a performance vehicle.

I’m just happy to have a new wagon coming to the states. The better this does, the more likely other manufacturers will release wagons. Maybe even ones that normal people can afford! One can dream.

My reaction:
Side Profile is gorgeous. Helped profusely by that color choice.
Front end: Gross
Back end: Also gross.
Weight: Too much gross.

If BMW designers had stopped designing & tweaking about half way through I think the car would look great.

What an unfortunate looking nose (although less offensive than the 4 series and 7 series). Also, why the bikini rear bumper? Just make the diffuser go all the way across like M models of yore.

It’s still looks a little green. It seems odd that they would show a car where they haven’t attached the front end to it yet
