Greetings, Autopians! It’s your weekend-boy here! One of my favorite car-related hobbies is simply looking for interesting cars, better known as car spotting. There is no better place for that than the great streets of New York City, specifically Manhattan. I recently found an excellent representation of a random car sighting in the city that never sleeps.
Last weekend, I was walking around the picturesque neighborhood of the West Village and came across the two machines you see in the photo above. If you don’t know anything about cars, the vehicle on the left is a Land Rover Discovery 2. The vehicle on the right is a Jaguar S-Type. The Disco is a 2003 and the Jag a 2005. Theoretically, you could have bought the same spec Discovery in 2004 as a 2004 model, and the Jag in 04 as a 2005 model. This would have been my ultimate two-car solution if I had been car shopping in 2004. Instead, I was a mere infant eating Gerber Puffs and watching Sesame Street.
Why, you may ask, is this the perfect two-car solution? Perhaps we should first talk about what a two-car solution is, for those who may be unfamiliar with the term.
A two-car solution is simply that: having two cars that perfectly balance one another. It can be a Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro as the family hauler, partnered by a 911 GT3 RS in the garage patiently awaiting a drive. There’s even an entire Instagram page dedicated to this concept; it’s among my favorite pages. (Followers can send in their two-car submissions. There are a lot of good ones, check them out.)
Color
Anyway, why would these two be my ultimate two-car solution? Well, take a look at the colors for starters. The Disco is painted in my all-time favorite Land Rover color: Icelandic Blue. It’s estimated that only about 200 were made in this color. It’s extremely rare, which is a shame, as I would for sure trade my Disco for one. The Jaguar is painted in the infamous, British Racing Green. I love green cars. In fact, I wrote an article about my favorites on St. Patrick’s Day. I mentioned British Racing Green, of course, giving a brief history of it. Two uncommon colors that complement each other so well. In a sea of white, gray, and black, having sky-blue and deep-green colored cars is just so elegant. I would sit on my apartment balcony sipping my tea, as I stared down and admired these two beauties.
Functionality
A giant 4WD SUV and a sleek 4-door sports sedan. You could use your Discovery to travel out to the Hamptons and take it on the sand, where it will for sure glide over. Be sure to hose it down afterward, those rear-cross chassis frames tend to rot! The Jaguar can be used to pick up an investor client in upper Manhattan and drive them down to a restaurant where you’ll spend $200 each on a steak. Both vehicles serve different, elegant purposes to live the ultimate, wealthy New Yorker experience.
British Cars In Manhattan
Owning two British cars in the city does not have to be difficult. Luckily Jaguar Land Rover of Manhattan is centrally located on the corner of 11th Ave and W 54th Street. When one breaks, you can simply drive the other! It’s bound to happen. Look at the fluid stains underneath the Disco. Ouch.
Tell me, Autopians. Do you have your own two-car solution sitting in your driveway? I’m curious as to what you have. Share with me! I won’t judge, unless it’s a Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain…
Cool topic! 2 car solution is indeed how many folks do it. My current 2 car solution:
2005 CTS-V manual with cam, long tubes, tune etc for fun and noise
2022 RAM 4×4 eTorque for towing, hauling, family taxi
Despite the CTS-V taking beatings since I got in in 2010, it’s been the most reliable car I’ve ever had, just regular maintenance, keeps going.
1993 80 series land cruiser, parts are getting tough but it’s solid and will tow the other if I ever need to.
2003 Lexus LS 430, ventilated seats, quiet, rwd V8. Smashed across entire country twice in 18 days with the lady, our 12 week old child and a furry 90 lb car alarm. Relationship still intact. Changed the oil and rotated tires in California. Try that in anything British or German.
My ultimate 2 car solution?
A His and His pair of late 90’s Mercedes-Benz R129 SL500s.
Dark green for him, Magma Red for me.
Because stuff can be delivered.
Toyota Sienna and Kei Firetruck. Maybe a Daihatsu Hijet or a Honda Acty. A car for the family and a car for the commute.
Triumph TR-4
82 GMC Sierra K-10 Stepside
Down to one car currently and I don’t like it. The Mini Cooper S/Nissan Frontier SV 4×4 was a good fit for Colorado because the Frontier did quite well in the winter. But the Mini got unreliable and too expensive to get right after 15 years. Replaced the Mini with a Honda Accord Hybrid then for when I used to go to the office periodically and the truck for winters. That was good. Moved to Arizona and started working remote 100% of the time, so truck became unneeded, but I kept it until the Accord hybrid died a horrid death and traded the truck for another (non-hybrid) Accord. So right now I’m plotting my perfect 2 car garage. I would like for a weekend car a 2004-2006 Pontiac GTO with a manual and daily is going to remain the Accord until I can get a Ford Maverick (hybrid).
My current 2 car solution is a 2019 WRX and a 2004 Jeep Wrangler.
The fun summer cars are a 1978 MGB and a 1967 Jeep CJ5.
You’d obviously be quite fit from walking a lot…
My current two-car solution is pretty awesome: a 2018 Ford Fiesta ST as my daily and a 2007 Chevy Suburban for backcountry adventures and doing real work. The FiST is cheap and economical enough while still being an absolute hoot to drive, and all the capabilities of the Suburban (6-8 passengers, 4WD, large gear loads, occasional trailering) legitimately get used. I also have an old Jaguar as a toy, but we won’t count that.
Back in the mid 2000s, a former neighbor of my parents’ had a late 1st gen Range Rover and an XJ40 era Jaguar XJ6. Both cars were matching white with tan interiors and they both had aftermarket upsized BBS lattice alloys. I always thought those two looked sick parked next to each other. Also, surely they can’t both be broken at the same time!
Umm. Yes. Yes, they can both be conveniently immobile.
Both came with Immobilizers, even if you didn’t order the anti-theft option….
My current two car solution is a 2022 Acura TLX A Spec and an 01 Cherokee XJ.
The TLX is getting a lot more use these days unfortunately.
Dream? Citroen C6 & Morgan Aero Max
Countache/LM002
I win. Goodnight
Wait, are people saying what cars they actually have? 2000 Subaru Legacy rustbox
I’ve never driven a Countache but for your own safety and the safety of those around you I’d highly recommend you never drive an LM002. When your engine quits you have no no power steering and no power brakes which in an LM002 means you cannot steer and you cannot stop. You’ll just keep going until you eventually run out of kinetic energy which you have way too much of in the first place at any speed.
It was the most devastating ‘Never meet your heroes’ moment I’ve ever had.
Ironically I’m now into microcars so I’ve done a bit of a 180
Two per person in the household right?
My wife’s dd is a 18 VW gsw 4mo 6 speed
Her unobtainium dream car would be a harlequin mk3 golf 5 speed
I have a 96 f150 Eddie Bauer that I wish was a 69 f250 on a obs diesel chassis and a 87 VW Jetta coupe that I will one day build as my dream car.
At least one car on the list is reliable and currently runs.
registered just to comment on this. i basically have my dream two car solution: 2016 ford focus RS (white) and 2022 ford maverick (cactus). pretty much love the both of them.
That’s a helluva combo!
Jaguar XF sport + ND1 Miata Club
My current two car solution is:
2001 BMW X5 manual 3.0 for people carrying and general hauling
2017 Mustang, also manual, for ass hauling…
A 98 1.4 Civic 2 door hatch and a 1.6 diesel Citroen C5. Japanese durability for daily driving and french confort for long trips!
Your last sentence literally describes my next door neighbor. Equinox for him, Terrain for her.
Mine would be a small runabout like a Bolt and something slightly larger like an ID Buzz. Take the Bolt when parking is an issue and take the Buzz for van stuff. Currently it’s a Cruze and a RAV4. Both tweaked to better suit our needs.
Your next door neighbors know what’s up.
It’s not as exciting as it could be, or even used to be, but the current 2 car solution is a sienna SE and a Peugeot 306 GTi-6, though technically three 306 doesn’t run and I’ve got a Cruze filling in until I can get it back on the road. Almost there!
Far from perfect, but I recently doubled the fleet and added a KJ Liberty to supplement the current Mazda2. On one hand, I have a reliable, nimble, thrifty car paired with one that’s a a little bigger (only a little bigger though, tight road and narrow driveway didn’t make me want much bigger than that) and more useful for house and family stuff. On the other hand, on long trips, I’ll have to chose between buzzy and thirsty. Also, sadly both silver.
2006 GMC Duramax pickup and 2007 C6 Corvette coupe.
Covers all my bases very well.
I’m happy with my 2016 Ford Focus RS purchased new and 2016 Mercedes E350 wagon purchased used; while I’m dreaming of a Porsche Cayman GTS.
You my friend, have taste! What color is the RS… important question
I love to see all the people that said Miata + something else. That was also my answer! My current two car garage is my nd2 Miata and my Ariel Nomad.
But I think you’re the only one that has the Miata as the “practical” car!
Green Rivian R1S and a lotus emira in yellow with a stick and the V6 with the touring suspension
Colors!
